A CAMPAIGNER leading the fight against a 440 home development at Micklethwaite is tackling the Three Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon in a sponsored challenge to help pay legal costs.

Greenhill Action Group (GAG) vice-chairman Mick Meares will hit the ground in Scotland at 9am on Saturday, August 22 and must make it down from Snowdon within 24 hours.

"It's a proper slog, and I don't really know what I've let myself in for," said father-of-two Mr Meares, 51.

"The driving alone is some 470 miles, plus about 22 miles walking, but it's for a good cause as I hope to make £1,000 in sponsorship towards our total legal bill of £83,000".

GAG is opposing the Bellway and Redrow Homes development at Sty Lane, which will go before an eight-day public inquiry starting on Tuesday, October 6.

Mr Meares has been training with Commando Fit, a boot camp exercise club in Saltaire.

"Some of the lads are coming to give me support and keep me on track, so I should make it with the help of Kendal mint cake and some malt loaf," said Mr Meares, a building society project manager from Micklethwaite.
