CHILDREN who got into difficulties in the River Aire at Saltaire after jumping from a wall managed to get out before six fire crews arrived to help them today.

Crews from six West Yorkshire stations attended the incident in Roberts Park at about 3pm.

It is believed that two teenage girls had jumped from a wall near The Boathouse Inn. A member of the public called the fire brigade after seeing the girls in difficulties. The drop from the wall to the water is about six feet.

Crews from Shipley, Bingley, Fairweather Green, Rothwell, Rastrick and Cleckheaton attended the scene.

A fire service spokesman said the girls were helped to safety before fire crews arrived.

The spokesman said the incident served as a warning not to venture into rivers which could be fast flowing and very cold.
