AT LEAST 300 hundred youngsters took part in a Keighley football tournament to commemorate Europe’s worst atrocity since the Second World War.

The “We are one” tournament at University Academy Keighley last Friday (July 13) brought together young people from across Keighley and Bradford to tackle hatred and intolerance.

The event honoured those killed in the Srebrenica massacre, in Bosnia, where about 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were murdered by Serb forces 23 years ago.

Among those who attended the tournament were Bradford Lord Mayor Councillor Zafar Ali and Riad Terzi?, a survivor of the Bosnian war.

Organiser Javed Bashir, who is Bradford Council’s school community development officer, said: “We had a minute’s silence and paid tribute to those who were killed in Bosnia.

“The tournament went very well. The idea was to get the message out to young people that we can live together and play together despite being different.

“We had about 30 teams, including sides from schools, madrasas and youth clubs.”
