SIR - I am writing with regard to Mr Palmer's letter (T&A letters, April 16) about the blue plaque on the City Hall.

Mr Palmer is right. The building is after the style of Venetian Gothic. This style is later than the Gothic used on Amiens Cathedral, which dates from the early 13th century.

Venetian Gothic dates from the late 13th century. The clock tower of City Hall is based on the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, it is not a direct copy. The clock on the tower in Florence is at the bottom of the tower, and dates from 1353. The clock on City Hall is much higher up, and the bells are above the clock face.

Norman Shaw worked with Bradford City architect Mr Edwards on the Town Hall extension. Edwards left Bradford Council in 1908. A new Bradford City architect, Mr Kirkby, then worked with Shaw to finish the project.

There are many myths regarding the City Hall. A lot of people think the weather vane on the tower is a dolphin. It is in fact a dragon.
