DOROTA PLATA

Dorota set up a support group to help Polish people in Keighley settle in to their new community back in 2008.

During the drop-in sessions she discussed issues such as education in the UK, the worker registration scheme, and how to fill in council tax forms for people still getting to grips with the language barrier.

Although the group has come to an end, Dorota now works at St Anne's Primary School and is still inundated with requests for support on a daily basis.

Staff have supported her in setting up an advice centre within the school, and she now accompanies people to GP and hospital appointments, makes calls to various agencies on their behalf, and has even supported some women during childbirth.

Jo Horrox, of Keighley and Ilkley Voluntary and Community Action, who nominated Dorota, said: "Her qualities are the ability to listen and relate effectively to people who are on the fringes of society.

"She has patience, compassion, and is a genuine and caring figure who offers hope to many in times of great need and uncertainty.

"Dorota is a well-known and respected figure within Keighley and has become the link person, not just for communities, but also by professionals who are struggling to engage with this new community."

IRENE VIDLER

Irene has been a Street Rep in Shipley for a number of years, and is also secretary of Northcliffe Allotment Society, a position she has held since 2005.

She has been on the committee for Shipley in Bloom since 2007, and has done occasional work with the police on citizenship over the past two years, talking to school children and also to young teenagers in residential care.

She led a team of 40 pupils from the gardening club at Harden Primary School in 2012 to create a series of hanging baskets designed to help brighten up the village and develop the children's interest in gardening.

Irene also represents the Shipley Constituency Area Partners' Advisory Group on the Shipley South Neighbourhood Forum.

She was nominated by Damian Fisher of Bradford Council, who said: "Irene works with the allotment service as the site representative for Northcliffe.

"She acts as liaison, addressing issues on the site and reporting back to the allotment officer.

"Irene is also a supporter of NEET (Northcliffe Environmental Enterprises Team), a charity which gives adults with learning disabilities an opportunity to gain a qualification in horticulture.

"She is also an active member of Neighbourhood Watch, attending police meetings and emailing the newsletters to residents."

THAMAN PUN

Thaman is the president of the Bradford Nepali Community Association, a group which includes a number of ex-Gurkhas.

To help older members, many of whom do not speak English, Thaman has made connections with existing community groups and Bradford Council to allow them to access the support they need.

He has helped to make a Nepalese interpreter available at health and social care appointments for members, and has worked to establish a community gardening project with New Horizons in Wyke.

Through Thaman's efforts, the Nepalese community also lay a wreath at Cenotaph in Bradford as part of the Remembrance Sunday service each year.

Helen Johnston, from the Armed Forces Community Covenant Partnership at Bradford Council, nominated Thaman and said: "Mr Pun is tireless in his support for the community.

"He is tenacious and passionate about ensuring they have access to the services they need to support their lives.

"He is also keen to promote the community and build their confidence, to show others what they can do and share their experience and history.

"There is a strong link between the Gurkhas and Scottish regiments, and it is an ambition of some of the older members of the community to see the Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle, so Thaman is working to make this happen."
