THE UK Independence Party has unveiled its candidate for Bradford South.

Businessman Stephen Place, of Bedale, North Yorkshire, will contest the seat held by Labour’s Judith Cummins.

Mr Place will officially kickstart his campaign at an event in Bradford city centre on Saturday.

He said: “I was brought up in Allerton and have lived in Thornton and Queensbury.”

He said he retained many links with the city and was a Bradford City season ticket holder.

Mr Place said he served as a police constable in Bradford and across West Yorkshire from 1978 to 1996, beginning on the beat, then working in CID before joining the mounted branch.

Mr Place said his time on the force included policing during the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry.

He said he was also working at Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground in 1985 when the fire broke out, killing 56 people.

At the meeting on Saturday, UKIP members will also decide whether to stand candidates in the Bradford East, Bradford West and Shipley constituencies.
