Union members at Bradford manufacturers Denso-Marston have voted in favour of industrial action after a pay wrangle.

Around 300 GMB members at the firm's Shipley plant are refusing to work overtime after rejecting several improved pay offers made by the firm.

GMB Bradford area manager Steve Jennings said "quite a difference" remained between the pay offers employees had received and the level they were looking for.

An anonymous Denso-Marston employee said union membership had increased since the dispute had begun late last month after a "long line of intimidation attempts by management". Mr Jennings said: "We are hoping to meet management later this week to get some movement on this situation.

"Union members have voted in accordance with employment law in a secret ballot for industrial action short of a strike and in favour of an overtime ban.

"We have tried final talks but the company has so far said they are not willing to meet our requirements. There is quite a difference between what we are wanting and what they are offering. The dispute involves full-time employees but is also complicated by the involvement of part-time agency workers.

"But we are in a fluid situation at the moment.

"We have around 400 GMB union members at the Shipley site with around 300 voting in favour of industrial action.

"Both myself and a colleague are working with the company and are keen to reach a settlement which our members are satisfied with."

Mr Jennings said the union was consulting legal representatives on the way to proceed.

HR manager Beverly Sagar said the company had no comment to make on the dispute.

Since moving to the Otley Road site in 1989, Denso-Marston employees, who produce cooling systems for vehicless, have created a three-acre wildlife park next to the site.

The company employs 900 at Shipley . Parent company Denso has plants around the world.
