An Ilkley-based group is playing a leading part in the redevelopment of London’s King’s Cross station, from where mainline rail services operate to West Yorkshire.

NG Bailey, one of the UK’s largest building services providers, is working with VINCI Construction UK to deliver the mechanical and electrical and information communication technology services for Network Rail.

NG Bailey will complete the contract in four phases, starting with the installation of a new plant room to serve the whole station.

Secondly, work will start on the station’s new Western Concourse, which is three times the size of the current concourse area. and will include new shops and restaurants.

It will also provide improved access to services on the Underground, the new Thameslink station and domestic and international services at the adjoining St Pancras International station.

The third part of the project will see NG Bailey refurbish the adjoining Western Range office block, a Grade I-listed building, which will house 150 station employees.

Finally, the company will work on new customer and security communications installations, including CCTV cameras, information screens and customer help points.

Tim Cunningham, operations director for NG Bailey in London, said: “We are delighted to be working on one of the city’s largest schemes. The redevelopment of the station is one of Network Rail’s most prestigious projects and one that we are proud to be part of.”

David Hurcomb, 46, is to become NG Bailey’s new chief executive in September. He is currently interim chief executive for Scottish-based printing and point-of-sale specialist Havelock Europa plc.

He stepped down from the main board of Carillion plc late last year, where he was responsible for the company’s UK building, private finance, property services and training services businesses, and was also a director of its Middle East joint venture.

Nimble Thompson, NG Bailey’s chairman, said: “It’s clear to see from his career to date that David’s industry expertise is second to none, and I have every confidence that he will lead NG Bailey through the recession and into a new and exciting era.”

He thanked acting chief executive Chris Newton for leading the group following the resignation of Mark Andrews in October.
