Blind international golfer Malcolm Elrick has teed off a new business venture with his wife Lesley.

The couple, from Crossflatts, have launched Scents & Senses, a stall in Bingley Market selling toiletries, candles, decorative towel sets and scented soaps.

They have been helped by Kickstart, Bradford Council’s enterprise development programme, who was contacted by former Bradford & Bingley employee Malcolm after Lesley thought about taking a market stall to sell the decorative towel and nappy ‘cakes’ she designs and produces at home.

This led to Tony Wilson, a Kickstart business adviser, working with Lesley and Malcolm to develop the business plan.

Further support was offered by Lucy Veall, an adviser with the Kickstart-backed Business Enablement Fund, which helps people with disabilities or those with sensory loss to set up a small business.

Malcolm said: “The market managers and other staff at the Markets Service have been brilliant and we are also getting a lot of good advice and practical support from Lucy and Tony.

“Because of my disability I am limited to what I can do, but I really enjoy helping on the stall and having a chat with customers.

“There’s a great community atmosphere in Bingley Market. Traders are very supportive of new businesses and offer great value friendly service to their customers.”

A former communications analyst, Malcolm is one of the world’s top five blind golfers and has been captain of the England team. He is currently captain of the Rabbits section at Horsforth Golf Club, where Lesley is secretary, and often plays golf with local celebrities.
