A Bradford cleaning products company is hoping to scoop a lucrative contract to supply the entire NHS with solutions to combat hospital bugs.

Chemspec Europe Ltd, based at Tong Park, Baildon, has beaten international competition to win an NHS competition to supply cleaning fluid for a national evaluation to find ways of fighting healthcare-associated infections.

Its fluid, Formula 429, has been chosen as one of nine selected from 250 products for trials by the NHS Smart Solutions. Chemspec Europe’s product is being evaluated in a three-month trial at the Royal Free and Barts hospitals in London and the University Hospital of North Teesside.

Julie Roberts, national sales and marketing manager, said the fluids used in the trials were applied in a fine spray, known as fogging, which enabled the anti-bacterial chemicals to soak into the texture of a room and not just rest on surfaces.

She said: “The trials provide us with the prospect of a major breakthrough with the NHS which would be a major boost for the business.”

If successful, the trials could mean Chemspec expanding its warehouse operations with some additional jobs. The firm is part of the US-based RPM Group and eight staff work in sales, distribution and administration. It supplies cleaning products for commercial and industrial use.

Formula 429 contains a patented formulation effective against a wide range of germs but harmless to humans.

Chemspec’s business benefited from recent serious floods across the UK as the anti-bacterial fluids kill germs caused by floodwater residue. They are also used to clean up after fires have been hosed out and the firm has also supplied materials to clean up after an infestation of bats.
