LEADING wool cloth producers from the district have today flown to China to promote their wares at one of the world’s biggest apparel fabrics and accessories exhibitions.

Five West Yorkshire firms are part of a 16-strong UK delegation attending the Intertextile event in Shanghai, to highlight that Yorkshire represents the biggest single manufacturing cluster of wool textiles in the UK.

The mission is supported by UK Trade & Investment and the UK Fashion and Textile Association.

Their trip to the city of the 24 hour bespoke suit comes as China sees the growth of an increasingly fashion-conscious middle class.

The delegation includes Bradford-based Joseph H. Clissold; Guiseley-based Abraham Moon & Sons, whose clients include Paul Smith and Burberry; and Taylor and Lodge, part of the Bradford-based Bulmer and Lumb Group, which provided the luxurious material for the Tom Ford tuxedo worn by Daniel Craig in the Bond film, Quantum of Solace. Bower Roebuck of Holmfirth and Huddersfield Fine Worsteds are also taking part.

Mark Robson, UKTI regional director, said: “Yorkshire fabrics are highly regarded in the textile industry and the county has a great legacy of weaving, design and manufacture. ‘Intertextile’ is an excellent showcase to demonstrate the region’s textile capabilities.”

The delegates will meet potential customers, explore new market opportunities, and learn about next season’s trends.

Will Halstead, Taylor & Lodge sales director said:“There is a real opportunity in China for companies such as Taylor & Lodge, with its heritage and its reputation for making some of the most luxurious fabrics in the world.

“This is the second time Taylor & Lodge have attended Intertextile in Shanghai, and the response from the first show was very promising. We now have a foothold in the market and, with the backing of our Chinese partner, Shandong Ruyi, we hope to continue the positive progress that has already been made in this very important market.”
