The Queen and Prime Minister have sent messages of congratulations to a Craven magazine that is celebrating its 75th anniversary next month.

The Dalesman – which has its headquarters at Broughton Hall – was first published in April 1939, just months before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Its founding editor Harry J Scott, a former Craven Herald journalist, ran the monthly journal from the front room of his home in Clapham.

After struggling to survive through wartime restrictions, which included strict paper rationing, the magazine quickly built a huge subscriber base around the world, rising to a circulation peak of more than 60,000.

During challenging times for the publishing industry it remains the best-selling regional magazine in the UK.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I want to wish the Dalesman huge congratulations on reaching their 75th anniversary”
