A farmer opened the gates to hundreds of visitors to raise awareness about local produce.

Ashlea Gill, who was born in Cottingley, opened the doors of Hole House Farm as part of the national Open Farm Sunday initiative to celebrate farming with workshops and demonstrations.

The Harrogate farm has been in the Gill family for three generations but when Ashlea married into the family she encouraged them to raise awareness to the public.Ashlea said: “We took our first tentative steps into farming full time just two years ago and were overwhelmed by the incredible response on Open farm Sunday.

“We have been selling our produce very successfully with family, friends, food festivals and markets but feel now is the time to open the farm gate and show the public who we are.”

“Over 120 people attended the event and we sold more than £1,000 worth of meat produce.”

Visitors enjoyed a farm walk, sheep shearing demonstrations along with a display of the equipment used on the farm.

Verity Clarke, of Bradford, said: “We found out about Open Farm Sunday through typing our postcode into the national website.

“We were looking for a free family event where we could educate our son Ben on farming life and the story of the food chain.

“Ashlea, Chris and volunteers were exceptional, knowledgable and fun. ”
