TWO men have been ordered to carry out unpaid work after stealing £6,000 from a Bingley-based steel firm.

Nicholas Summers, 32, of Ashfield Road, Birstall, worked as a finance manager at Stainless Band, and on January 13, 2017, diverted a payment to a contractor to the bank account of Matthew Webster, 32, of Greenlea Court, Dalton, Huddersfield.

The men had taken the money, a total of £6,012.05, to fund legal fees in court cases.

Their actions were discovered when the contractor, Independent Slitters, contacted Stainless Band to find out why it hadn’t been paid.

Both men pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to the theft, and the money has since been returned in full to the company.

Mitigating, Laura McBride said Summers “accepted it was ludicrous” to take the money.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC sentenced Summers to 150 hours unpaid work and Webster to 100 hours unpaid work, and said they were “two very daft men”.
