A civil engineering organisation has backed calls for faster progress on plans to establish a rail link to Leeds-Bradford International Air-port.

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (Yorkshire and Humberside) has lent its weight to calls for the rail link to be prioritised this year.

The calls come as Bradford Council’s executive is in discussions regarding a new £1 billion West Yorkshire transport fund.

The proposed rail link is envisaged as a tram or train route, linking the existing Harrogate and Wharfedale lines by building a new stretch of railway between Horsforth and Guiseley, with a station at the airport.

Mark Roper, Yorkshire and Humberside director of the civil engineering association, said: “This proposed rail link would provide a vital boost to the local economy and enable cities in North and West Yorkshire to keep up with competitor cities, such as Manchester and Newcastle, both of which have much speedier links to their local airports.”
