Pupils at a Bingley primary school have been rewarded for their successes in a summer reading challenge.

A special assembly was held at Eldwick Primary School where certificates were handed out to pupils who completed the challenge.

A total of 78 gold certificates were handed out to pupils who read six books from the school’s library and six from Bingley Library, as part of its Story Lab challenge, over the summer holiday and 171 silver certificates were handed out to those who read six books from the school’s library.

Headteacher Janice Kershaw said the challenge had been a success.

She said: “It’s absolutely crucial, from our point of view, that the children keep reading. With all the new technological gadgets and things they are doing less and less reading and our research shows children need to read at least 20 minutes a day to ensure good progress across all areas of the curriculum.

“It was a real success and really energised the children in terms of their reading – they have come back after the summer very excited about the books they have read.”
