The first Bradford Science Festival got off to an explosive start with a journey through the fundamental aspects of fireworks.

Matthew Tosh and Skyburst, the Firework Company, led a demonstration into the Science Of Fireworks at Bradford College yesterday, part of the opening day activities. Pupils experienced flash powder mixes, the science of shockwaves, momentum and creating different sounds and effects, including bangs, crackles and whistles.

The five-day festival, organised by Space Connections, a Bradford-based education team, is being held following the success of last year’s British Science Festival, hosted at the University of Bradford.

Helen Barraclough, who leads the Space Connections team, at the new Inspire Bradford business park in Eccleshill, said: “The first day has gone really well.

“We have had lots of happy teachers and children just had so many questions.

“What we wanted to do was inspire them to think more about science.”

The adult programme also kicked off yesterday with the first 50 Shades of Science event, which will continue today. The school’s programme will continue today and tomorrow.
