A father has told how he was smashed over the head with a mirror as he disturbed a burglar ransacking his family home.

Mukhtar Iqbal, 27, was left unconscious on a floor covered in glass after he caught the man searching a bedroom at his house on Harlow Road, Lidget Green, Bradford.

The attack happened on June 9 at 9.45pm, but despite the victim helping police draw up an e-fit of the suspect, no-one has yet been caught.

Mr Iqbal, who this week began counselling to help him come to terms with his ordeal, said he will be unable to get “closure” until the burglar is caught and brought to justice.

He said: “I’m on edge, my family is on edge. They’ve put up more security, but I don’t want to feel like a prisoner in my own home.

“My daughter is six and she’s afraid to go to the toilet on her own. It’s affected my work.

“I want this person to be caught.”

Mr Iqbal, who lives with his wife and daughter as well as his brother and sister-in-law, saw he was home alone on the night of the attack after watching a Euro 2012 group match between Germany and Portugal with friends.

“A group of about eight to ten of us were watching it, but as soon as the match finished they all went to collect my wife from Dewsbury,” he said.

“I didn’t lock the front door and went straight to the toilet. While I was there, I heard footsteps. I thought it must be my brother, so I didn’t think anything of it.

“About 30 seconds later I heard a noise that didn’t sound normal, so I went out on to the landing.

“It was then I saw a man trying to take a mirror off the bedroom wall and he smashed me over the head with it.

“He was leaning back so he could hit me with more force and he knocked me out.”

Mr Iqbal said when he came round ten to 15 minutes later, the house had been ransacked and the suspect – believed to be part of a gang – had fled.

“A lot of stuff had been damaged,” he said. “They smashed the television, my laptop and had emptied plant pots. I think they were searching for jewellery. They’d even taken the cistern off the toilet.

“One of the only things that hadn’t been touched was the Koran. It makes me think maybe they had some sort of conscience.”

Mr Iqbal was taken to hospital for treatment for concussion.

He said: “For me, the good side is that my family wasn’t there and I was on my own.

“I only managed to get a three or four second glance at the man, but helped police draw up an e-fit. I can’t get the image out of my head.”

The suspect is described as white, aged between 25 and 30, of stocky build and with a distinctive chin. He was wearing a black hooded top and jeans.
