The most vulnerable sections of the local population are being urged to protect themselves against flu this winter.

Adults and children with a range of medical conditions, pregnant women, carers and everyone over 65 are being targeted in NHS Bradford and Airedale’s latest flu campaign.

Pregnant women are being encouraged to get the jab to pass immunity to their baby and carers are also eligible for a free vaccination so they can continue to give care and keep those they care for protected.

In addition, children in the at risk groups are being offered the flu vaccine, including those attending special schools.

The vaccine is offered free to all those in at risk categories, which include people over 65 years of age; adults and children with long-term medical conditions such as diabetes or chronic kidney disease, chronic heart, chest and liver disease, chronic neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and stroke and those with lowered immunity due to cancer or other causes.

Dr Shirley Brierley, public health consultant for NHS Bradford and Airedale, said: “It is imperative that all people in at risk groups understand how important it is to get their free flu jab.

“They are more likely to develop complications if they catch flu and the seasonal flu jab will not only protect them, it will also protect their families and the people around them.

“Flu is a highly infectious illness caused by a virus. It changes every year, as does the vaccine to fight it, so it is important that those at risk protect themselves every year.”
