A community leader has welcomed more than 250 jobs created with the opening of a new supermarket – but warned it will create traffic problems.

The 38,000 square-foot Asda store is due to open in Bradbeck Road, off Cemetery Road, Lidget Green , on Monday, November 19, bringing 253 new jobs.

Ward councillors have welcomed the new jobs created at the former MFI site, though one has warned traffic issues could be heightened when it opens.

Councillor John Godward (Labour, Great Horton ) said: “The number of jobs is the one positive aspect of the development.

“It’s a matter of the problems it’s going to create with the traffic coming through Lidget Green.

“That road is extremely busy for most of the day.

“This will just put more traffic on that road and that’s one thing that might dampen the issue.

“The jobs are very welcome, particularly at this moment in question in this place.”

Councillor Abdul Jabar (Labour, Great Horton) said: “We are very happy that it is going to create new jobs in the current climate – we are very happy that it’s going to be there.”

The new store team will be led by general manager Barkat Ali.

Joining him will be Craig Watson who has been chosen to be the store’s community life champion.

One of Mr Watson’s first challenges will be to launch the Chosen by You, Given by Us initiative in which three local organisations will be voted for by customers to receive support from the new store.

The 24-hour store will incorporate a 4,700 sq ft George department, a café, a pharmacy and a petrol filling station.

Barkat Ali said: “We are really excited about another Asda opening in Bradford and want to make sure we give the store a name which has been formed by votes from local residents.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the responses and announcing the overall winner.”
