A research project exploring the impact of destitution among asylum seekers in Bradford has been unveiled.
The study, which was carried out by independent researcher Dr John Lever over five weeks in June and July, recorded 66 destitute asylum seekers in the city.
The report was commissioned by Destitution Concern Bradford, made up of organisations including Bradford Ecumenical Asylum Concern and Bradford Council and was discussed at Kala Sangam in Forster Square yesterday.
Destitution is defined as having no access to public funds, unable to access legal employment or lacking the means to provide for themselves and either homeless or staying with friends indefinitely.
The report recommends the Government changes its policy to allow local authorities to help asylum seekers facing destitution.
