City set for World Curry Festival

Visitors to Bradford next weekend will be able to spice up their lives with the colours, smells and tastes of the World Curry Festival which hits the city for the first time.

The three-day festival will begin on Friday, September 21, at 11am in City Park and will continue through to Sunday.

Chefs who will be showcasing their skills and dishes at the event include:

Anjali Pathak, whose family is behind the Patak’s brand of curry sauces and pastes

Stephanie Moon, the Craven-born chef who has appeared on BBC2’s Great British Menu

Mohammed Aslam, the managing director and executive chef of the Shipley -based Aagrah group of restaurants

Kaushy Patel, the founder and executive chef at Prashad in Great Horton , which was named Gordon Ramsay's best Indian restaurant in 2010

Gurpareet Bains, 2011 English Curry Awards chef of the year and creator of the world's healthiest curry

Barrington Douglas, the man behind the award-winning Caribbean restaurant in Huddersfield – Discovery Bay.

In addition, chefs at Bradford College will also be taking part and there will be curry and comedy with Celebrity Masterchef finalist, writer and broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli.

Organiser Zulfi Karim said: “We are really excited to be holding the World Curry Festival in Bradford, the reigning Curry Capital of the UK and the world’s First City of Film .

“Bradford has an excellent reputation for some of the finest Asian food in the country, and the waters and fountains of the stunning City Park provide the perfect backdrop to our famously colourful and vibrant festival.

“Our celebrity chefs will be working side-by-side with local talent, demonstrating their mastery and bringing you some delicious recipes from South Asia to the Caribbean.

“The World Curry Festival was created in 2010, in celebration of 200 years since the first curry house was originally established in the UK. The event, now in its third year, attracts curry-lovers in their thousands.”

A variety of street theatre will also be taking place around City Park, including Comedy Waiters, Chicken Coup, Bang On, Cake Ladies, Fairly Fresh Fish Co, Cheesy Rider, Foodies, Vegetable Nannies and Little Cafe.

There will also be showings of animation Ratatouille and film Julie and Julia at the National Media Museum as part of the festival. A further cultural programme will be announced shortly
