Peals of bells across Bradford district herald start of Olympics
10:42am Friday 27th July 2012 in News By Hannah Baker
Bells are rung at Kiddi-Creche Nursery in Cottingley to celebrate the start of the Olympics
Youngsters in the Bradford district were among thousands of people across the country joining in a mass bell ring today to herald the official start of the Olympic Games.
Toddlers at Kiddi-Creche Nursery in Cottingley , who have been learning about London 2012, took part in the UK-wide event, which saw thousands of bells peel for three minutes from 8.12am.
Big Ben rang 40 times while church bells, doorbells and bicycle bells were also sounded during the performance, which was started by the firing of cannons on HMS Belfast.
The event was part of a project by Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed.
