A 21-year-old Keighley man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an elderly couple outside York Minster on Saturday.
North Yorkshire Police say the man has been bailed while enquiries continue.
Witnesses reported seeing a man punch the couple at 7.15pm.
He was arrested at the scene but the alleged victims left the area before officers arrived.
Police are appealing for the couple involved to come forward.
