Veterans from all of the armed forces will be honoured in Bradford this weekend as part of Armed Forces Week.

Local residents are invited to attend Jubilee Armed Forces Day in Centenary Square tomorrow.

The event will start at 10.50am when the standards of the various ex-service associations in the Bradford district form a parade into Centenary Square led by the 1224 Wharfedale Squadron Cadet Band.

This will be followed by a Drumhead service at 11am with a welcome and introduction by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith. It will be led by the Rev Canon Sam Corley, Canon Precentor at Bradford Cathedral.

The Cadet Band will then play, before a concert by the Yorkshire Band of the Royal British Legion at noon.

Meanwhile a service of commemoration to remember the sacrifice made by the Bradford Pals will take place on Sunday at 11am in the Memorial Garden behind the Cenotaph, next to the Alhambra Theatre.

The event is held annually at the Bradford Pals’ Memorial Stone to ensure the sacrifice of members of the local Pals battalions that took part in the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916, is never forgotten.

It will consist of a service conducted by the Rev Paul Flowers, chaplain to the Bradford Branch of the Royal British Legion, a performance by local choir, The Queensbury Singers, and a contribution from Bradford World War One Group. Members of the Great War Society will attend in World War One battledress.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford will also lay a wreath on behalf of the city.

Coun Smith said: “It is immensely important that we honour and appreciate the massive contribution and sacrifices that our veterans have made on behalf of the country and the district. I hope that people will show their support by attending these services.”
