An appeal to restore the church where two of the famous Bronte sisters are buried has received a £20,000 boost.

Grade II-listed Haworth Parish Church, which houses the graves of Emily and Charlotte Bronte, has secured the grant from the National Churches Trust to help make it watertight and repair damage caused by leaks.

The trust announced the contribution this week as part of a programme of grants totalling £546,000 for 30 places of worship in England, Scotland and Wales.

Its chief executive, Claire Walker, said: “Many of the church buildings we are supporting are major architectural landmarks. They are much-loved both by local people and by visitors.”

Haworth Parish Church will temporarily close next month as part of the first stage of a project to replace its south-facing roofs and refurbish its tower.
