Environment Agency bosses are warning that heavy rain could lead to surface water flooding in parts of Yorkshire.

Over the next two days, heavy showers are expected in the region.

These showers will be short, sharp and often heavy in places.

The Environment Agency is warning that there could be a risk of some surface water flooding, which happens when the local drainage systems cannot cope with rainfall.

It said it was extremely difficult to predict precisely where surface water flooding will happen as it depends on ground levels, the amount of rainfall, and the local drainage network.

In Bradford, heavy showers are expected late afternoon.

Phil Younge, regional flood manager for the Environment Agency said, “Yorkshire and the North East has experienced some severe weather over the last week, and with further rain forecast for the next few hours, we would urge the public to remain vigilant, check local weather forecasts, and the Environment Agency website for information.

“Our thoughts are with those people whose homes and businesses have been affected by flooding. Our staff have been out working hard to provide communities with as much assistance and information as possible.”

The Environment Agency has staff working in communities across the two regions, checking for blockages in the watercourses.

In Todmorden, the Environment Agency’s flood scheme contractors will be removing gravel from Walsden Water which had been flushed downstream in the weekend’s floodwater.
