New figures released by tourism chiefs reveal more than 100,000 spectators turned out to watch the Olympic flame as it made its way through Bradford district as part of its historic 8,000-mile trip around the UK.

A total of 30,000 Bradfordians watched in City Park and Lister Park, 20,000 in both Keighley and Ilkley and 25,000 in Skipton, said tourist body Welcome to Yorkshire.

Another 10,000 people in Brighouse were among more than one million who saw the torch relay across Yorkshire during the past six days, the highest turnout in any county so far.

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity said the relay had been a “huge success” which had provided a massive boost to trade.

In Bradford, Thomas Stokes, a volunteer for the One In a Million charity which works with disadvantaged children, carried the torch into City Park and performed the flame hand-over to swimmer Jamie Brown.Visitors lined the paths in Lister Park as Khalil Hussain, who works to promote community cohesion in Manningham, took his turn in carrying the torch.

In Keighley, torch-bearers Catherine Bull, Jerry Ward and Rodger Davies were urged on by enthusiastic flag-waving. and Ilkley witnessed former nurse Margaret Cook as one of 8,000 torchbearers across the UK.

Mr Verity said: “This has been a great opportunity for us to show off our great county to the world. We have had camera crews from as far away as Australia covering the torch as it made its way through the county.”

Businesses have seen an upsurge in trade as a result of the torch, with many cafes, restaurants and local attractions packed, he said.

Mr Verity, who worked with London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to bring the relay to Yorkshire, added: “Six-and-a-half days is the longest period the torch will spend in any county outside London.”
