Bradford residents are being invited to take up an insulation scheme to reduce their energy bills in what could be the last chance to receive the work for free.

Bradford Council is working with energy company npower to deliver the Community Warmth scheme.

The project offers householders free cavity wall and free loft insulation if they currently have less than 60mm of existing loft insulation in their home. But as the scheme looks likely to end this year, this is the last chance to take advantage for free.

Installing cavity wall insulation will reduce a household’s energy bills by approximately £135 every year, while the correct amount of loft insulation will save up to £175 a year.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, the Council’s executive member for environment, sport and sustainability, said: “This scheme directly benefits any household that wants to take up the insulation measures and saves people money off their annual energy bills.

“It is very good news for the Bradford district and the Council is proud to be playing the lead role on behalf of our residents.”

Anyone wanting to take advantage of the scheme does not need to be an npower customer. They do need to live in the Bradford district and have a suitable property which is owner-occupied or privately rented.

To benefit from the scheme, telephone 0845 8730505 to arrange an appointment with a Community Warmth surveyor for a free no-obligation survey.

Those who do are urged to check the identity of anyone calling at their home. All Community Warmth surveyors carry an ID badge and a letter of authentication from the Council.

The company began a new Community Warmth programme in 2008 to provide home insulation and other energy-efficiency measures to vulnerable fuel-poor households in certain areas of the country. Following a successful pilot in Leeds, schemes were launched in Bradford and Lincolnshire.

The scheme is in partnership with local authorities and takes a house-by-house, street-by-street approach to delivering energy-saving measures to homes.
