This weekend sees the Saltaire Arts Trail, and organisers say this year’s event is the biggest yet.

The trail, running until Monday, features Open Houses, in which visitors are invited to step inside the historic cottages built for Sir Titus Salt’s millworkers. Handmade artwork and crafts will be displayed in people’s homes.

Another regular feature, the Makers Fair, also returns, with more than 60 designers and makers selling their work and giving demonstrations in Victoria Hall.

Newly-commissioned contemporary artwork will include a new work by emerging West Yorkshire artist Eoin Shea, a photography exhibition drawing on Saltaire’s textile heritage and a project by Saltaire-based artists Yvonne Carmichael and Andy Abbott encompassing photography, sound installations and a guided walk.

In partnership with Bradford City of Film, Saltaire Arts Trail will present an artist film strand for the first time. Curated by Cherry Kino, an independent organisation exploring the artistic possibilities of analogue film, the strand will include a film installation in Saltaire’s laundrette and a screening in the top room of Salts Mill.

Fans of metalsmith Cathy Miles will see her at work on Sunday from 2pm to 4 pm at the Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery, creating a new piece of work inspired by the model village, using a concoction of wire, found materials and text.

Children’s events include building a carnival tent, making a carousel hobby horse and getting messy with paint in the Garden of Easels.

Tomorrow evening sees WunderNacht, a celebration of local creative talent featuring film, animation, dance, live music, real ale, food, poetry and storytelling.

Creative director Amanda Chinneck says: “We’re delighted to be offering such a packed programme for 2012, offering many firsts sitting alongside regular attractions.”
