People in Bradford have organised 17 street parties to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with just a day left to apply for road closures.

Bradford Council revealed there had been a late rush of people applying to hold private street parties before tomorrow’s deadline.

As well as private and community events, preparations are continuing for the Lord Mayor’s Parade on Saturday, May 19.

The event will include jubilee-themed costumes and floats, as well as a royal corgi parade — a walking float of fibre-glass corgis in tribute to the Queen’s favourite breed of dog.

John Lambert, of Q20 Theatre which is organising the parade, said: “Preparations are going fantastically well. We’ve made a giant corgi, which looks absolutely amazing, as well as a 10ft-tall crown which will be carried through the streets.

“We have more than 1,000 school children from across the district getting involved and they’re going to look amazing. This promises to be the biggest and best Lord Mayor’s Parade yet.”

The royal corgis will form an open air installation at the close of the parade around the mirror pool in City Park.

They will later be auctioned at a charity gala for the Lord Mayor’s charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care in Bradford.
