A woman in Bradford has been charged with manslaughter over the death of her four-month-old son after a television fell on top of him.

Kian McMillan was taken to hospital with head injuries following the incident at his home in Scarlett Street, Burnley, on December 6 last year.

He was transferred from the Royal Blackburn Hospital to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital but died the next day.

Natalie McMillan, 24, now of Bradford, has been charged with manslaughter by gross negligence and child cruelty, said Lancashire Constabulary.

Edward Hanratty, 40, also from Bradford, is accused of child cruelty. A police spokeswoman said: “Both have been bailed to appear before Burnley Magistrates' Court on May 1.”

Residents in the Burnley street had been left in shock following the incident in December.

Tributes were left on the doorstep of the house while forensics teams carried out examinations in the aftermath of the incident.

The Lancashire Telegraph, part of the same group as the Telegraph & Argus, reported how one of the tributes laid at the side said “RIP Little Fella” while another called Kian a “little angel”.

Neighbours said the couple had not lived in the street.

David Jackson, of Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, said: “I am shocked that something like this has happened around here.

“It is quite a tight-knit community and everybody is really upset at what has happened.”

At the time, Councillor Elizabeth Monk, who represents the Trinity ward, said: “It is very tragic news and my heart goes out to everybody affected. It is so shocking close to Christmas and it has really had an impact on the community.”
