Pupils at Lees Primary School, Keighley, saddled up to win a top prize in the Climate Week Challenge.

Their idea of using bicycle power to light the school gave them first prize in the national contest.

The pupils also suggested generating electricity with special jackets worn by children running in the playground.

The winning team were six-year-olds Noah Loiacano and Ben Miekle and Kyle Broadbent, Millie Parker and Thomas Hargreaves, all aged seven.

Pupils from the school were among 130,000 people from schools and workplaces across the UK taking part in the challenge.

Kathryn Bottomley, senior leader at the School, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part, really using their imaginations and working as a team. This is a real focus for our school anyway and it really helped us to think about how we could make our world a better place.”
