A partygoer wept as she told a jury she was knocked to the ground by a man who tried to rape her in a children’s play area.

The mother, in her 30s, said she was grabbed and tripped in Lund Park, Keighley, by an attacker she believed was calling her a taxi home.

She suffered a broken ankle in a struggle with Graham Butterfield, 30, who she accuses of pulling down her clothing and exposing himself at around 6am on February 6 last year.

Butterfield, formerly of Central Avenue, Keighley, denies attempted rape, an alternative offence of sexual assault, and causing actual bodily harm.

The woman told the jury yesterday she managed to get up after Butterfield put her to the ground but he knocked her down again.

She said she was pinned by the shoulders as she struggled and shouted.

The woman alleged Butterfield lay on top of her. He was angry and had adrenaline going through him.

But he suddenly stopped attacking her and they walked out of the fenced-off play area.

Cross-examined by Butterfield’s barrister, Jayne Beckett, the woman denied that she “freaked out” as a result of drink and, possibly, drugs.

Mrs Beckett suggested she “lost it” and was hysterical, accusing Butterfield of rape.

The woman said she was in a dishevelled state when she went to a nearby house for help.

She agreed she told friends she did not want the police involved, saying it was “not a very nice thing to have to discuss with people”.

But later that day, she was persuaded to make a complaint.

Mrs Beckett suggested the woman had “blown up and exaggerated the incident” and there was nothing sexual to it.

The woman denied this, telling the jury her account was the truth.

Prosecutor Nicholas Barker has told the court Butterfield and the woman had met for the first time at a house party in Keighley.

Both had been on separate nights out in the town.

Mr Barker said that when the party broke up, Butterfield offered to help the woman call a taxi.

He told her he was married with a young child and she felt safe with him.

The trial continues.
