Friends and family have paid tribute to a much-loved builder tragically killed in a road accident.

Jonathan English, known to most as Jonny, suffered fatal injuries when his Fiat Punto overturned on Ilkley Road, Addingham, near to the junction with Old Lane at around 8pm on Friday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr English, 28, was brought up in Addingham and went to school in the village before attending Ilkley Grammar.

He lived in Bingley and worked in the building trade with his father. His partner, Kaye Walker, lives in Addingham.

Mr English’s best friend Nathaniel Jean-Baptiste paid tribute to him on behalf of Mr English’s parents, Jackie and Kevin, partner Kaye, sister Clayre and her fiance Cameron and close friends Kate Chatsworth, Jordan Farrow and Daniel Brady.

Mr Jean-Baptiste, of Burley-in-Wharfedale, said: “He was always smiling and always optimistic, he always looked on the bright side of things.

“Every time we went out somewhere, we’d always lose him and ask ‘where’s Jonny?’, and we’d find him on the other side of the club speaking to a complete stranger. He always had time for people. This would be every time we went out, in another place or even in another country.”

Mr Jean-Baptiste said they had been best friends since they were boys and did everything together.

He said Mr English loved football and skiing holidays.

Cards attached to flowers left at the scene of the accident read: “Wee Jonny, will miss your smiling happy face, RIP” and “So sorry we could not do more”.

A funeral service for Mr English will take place at St Peter’s Church in Addingham on Wednesday, March 28.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened around 100 yards from houses.

A woman living nearby said the scene after the crash was “like something from a warzone”.

A man who heard the accident from his home claimed the main problem with the road was lighting.

Councillor Michael Kelly (Con, Craven), who lives in Addingham, said: “It's a terrible tragedy. It’s a quiet road used mainly by cyclists, walkers and buses.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the black Fiat Punto being driven just before the crash, is asked to call police on (01924) 293047 or on the West Yorkshire force’s non-emergency number 101.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
