The owner of a dirty Bradford take-away restaurant has been fined more than £2,000 in a prosecution brought by Bradford Council.

Council officers visited Yazz’s Pizza Diner in Oak Lane, Manningham, last year and recorded a catalogue of food hygiene regulation breaches.

Yazz’s owner, Abdul Jaleel Khan, of Bromford Road, Bowling, Bradford, pleaded guilty to ten offences of breaching food hygiene regulations and one health and safety offence of failing to prevent danger from a burnt-out electrical wall socket.

He was fined £2,200 by Bradford magistrates and ordered to pay £1,400 costs and £15 victim surcharge.

In mitigation the court was told that the company had been trading at a loss and that Mr Khan had been off work with a back problem.

The bench was told that Mr Khan had previously been issued with a Notice of Improvement by Environmental Health Officers. Following this, improvements had been made by late 2010 but the premises had deteriorated by May 2011.

Following the case, Ruth Lees, Bradford Council principal environmental health manager, said: “We are determined to ensure that all Bradford’s eating establishments comply with strict hygiene regulations.

“Restaurant owners who ignore good hygiene practices put the health of their customers at risk and that is something we will not tolerate.”

Outlining the particulars of the charges, the Council said the premises were in a general dirty condition with a filthy can opener and dirty dough aerator. Inspectors also found cooked chicken left to cool on cardboard. There was also a pen and papers stored in a container of pizza herbs.

Access to the hand washing basin was blocked and food was stored in an unhygienic way.
