An Ilkley student has captained his team to success in the long-running University Challenge TV quiz.

Tristan Burke, 22, led the University of Manchester team to a 180-135 win over Pembroke College, Cambridge, watched by three million viewers.

And in a change from the usual tradition, the former Ilkley Grammar School pupil collected the winning trophy from the Duchess of Cornwall at a special presentation ceremony at Clarence House in London to mark the 50th anniversary of the show.

Mr Burke, who is studying English Literature, was joined by Michael McKenna, from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, Luke Kelly, from Ashford, Kent, and Paul Joyce, from Chorley, Lancashire.

They were joined by the runners-up and question-master Jeremy Paxman.

The Duchess revealed she had been a fan since the series launched.

“It was a great honour to go to Clarence House and we were also given a tour of St James’s Palace and the Chapel Royal,” the winning captain, who left Ilkley Grammar School in 2008, said.

It is the third time in seven years a team from the university has won the programme.
