Staff and pupils at a Bradford primary school are preparing for a major fundraising drive in aid of Cancer Research UK to honour the memory of their former head teacher who died of cancer.

Stewart Duxbury lost his life last October aged 54, following a battle with the disease.

Tomorrow, all 470 pupils at Bradford Moor Primary School, where he worked, will take part in a sponsored run at Myra Shay, watched by parents, governors and well-wishers.

Staff at the school say they are particularly pleased Mr Duxbury’s widow Gill and sons Adam and Matthew will be joining them.

On Sunday, a group of staff, Mr Duxbury’s family and friends will take part in the Bradford 10k run.

Other fundraising activities, including a non-uniform day and supermarket bag-packing are also planned.

Jayne Morgan, curriculum manager at Bradford Moor Primary School said:“Stewart was our head teacher and his death was really sad. We decided that when we felt a bit more positive, we would do something really big and keep Stewart’s memory in the minds of the children because of everything that he did for the school.

“He was so dedicated and this school meant everything to him and so this means everything to us.

“Stewart benefited from experimental drugs through Cancer Research UK, which enabled him to continue to work enthusiastically with the school, even while undergoing treatment.

“Stewart’s cancer was unfortunately in the advanced stages when identified and therefore a memorial fund has been established with Cancer Research UK aimed specifically at research on early diagnosis.

“The school is keen to raise, as much money as possible to enable others to live a positive and active life exemplified by a greatly respected and much- missed head teacher.”
