Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, the Conservative party co-chairman and the first Muslim female in the cabinet, visited an Islamic college for girls in Bradford yesterday.

She attended the Jamiatul Imaam Muhammad Zakaria School in Clayton, which provides an Islamic education to nearly 500 boarders.

Baroness Warsi and Jackie Whiteley, the Conservative candidate for Bradford West in the forthcoming by-election, spoke to students and were given a tour of the school.

Baroness Warsi, who said some of her relatives had attended the school, described herself as deeply British and Muslim and told the students: “If you are prepared to put in the hard work and you are committed, then every opportunity is available to you.”

Mrs Whiteley, who was formerly a careers advisors, said if elected she would be the first female MP for Bradford West.

She added that with her experience as a businesswoman and in careers guidance, she hoped to be enable people to reach their full potential.
