A North Craven after-school childcare facility is busy boosting learning thanks to its popular homework club.

Settle Primary School’s After School Club, run by staff from ChipMonks Day Nursery, scores top marks with busy parents by offering entertainment, fun and homework at its daily sessions.

The club runs from 3.30pm to 5.30pm five nights a week and activities include trips to the park, smoothie making, crafts, outdoor sports, film nights and the increasingly popular homework club.

Helen Monks, proprietor of ChipMonks, said: “This has been really popular with both parents, and more surprisingly, the children.

“They love showing the staff of ChipMonks their reading skills and often challenge us with their numeracy and spellings. Gentle persuasion is sometimes needed to encourage children to do their spellings, but often once one is doing it the rest want to join in.

“It is rewarding for the staff as well as we get a real opportunity for quality one-to-one time with the children. Parents are very grateful for this service as it’s all done by the time they get home and the family can spend some relaxing time together rather than having to entice tired and grouchy kids to do homework!”

Headteacher Richard Wright said: “The homework club is making a significant difference to the quality of life for certain families and as such has become a very important service that we provide for our working parents.”
