A former hospital porter caught with a £100,000 Drugs stash, a stun gun and ammunition at his Bradford home has been jailed for five years.

Kashif Raza had crack cocaine with a street value of more than £50,000 in the bedroom at his address in Jesmond Avenue, Heaton, and blocks of cannabis resin valued at £54,000 in his car, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Raza, 31, was also storing a stun gun, bulleted cartridges and £7,840 in cash, prosecutor Alisha Kaye said.

He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to possession of the drugs with intent to supply, possession of ammunition without a firearms certificate and possession of a prohibited weapon and criminal money.

Miss Kaye told the court Raza was arrested on December 21, 2010, when police executed a search warrant at 7.45am. Drugs squad officers also seized electronic scales and mobile phones.

Raza told them he was a drug user who had run up a debt.

His barrister, Mohammed Nawaz, said he had never been in trouble with the police before and in every other respect had led a positive life. Although he had significant health problems, Raza had held down jobs as a hospital porter, taxi operator and cab driver.

The court heard Raza began smoking cannabis when his marriage broke down and that escalated to cocaine use. He became heavily in debt with his suppliers and involved with the sale of drugs.

Judge Jonathan Rose said Raza was a prime example of how smoking the occasional cannabis cigarette could lead to addiction to Class A drugs and involvement in crime to feed the habit.

He told Raza: “You have involved yourself in a very high degree of criminality.”

After the case, Sergeant Steve Banks, of the Bradford Drugs Team, said: “This was a substantial seizure which has resulted in a key individual in the trade of drugs removed from the streets of Bradford. Both the police and the courts take an extremely dim view of those who cause fear in our communities.”
