Police have hailed a “clear reduction” in reports of alcohol-related crime in the city centre following a crackdown on street drinkers.

A total of four full anti-social behaviour orders and six interim orders – one of which expired yesterday – have been handed out since the start of Operation Sacred in the autumn.

Nine out of the ten were given orders banning them from acting or inciting others to act in an anti-social manner, including consuming alcohol in designated areas and being drunk in public, as well as possessing any opened bottle, can or container of alcohol in public unless on licensed premises.

A tenth person was banned from sitting or sleeping in or near entrances, exits or fire escapes of public buildings, begging in a public place and using threatening or abusive language and behaviour.

Inspector Kevin Pickles, of the City Ward Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Since this operation began in October last year, we have seen a clear reduction in reports of alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the city centre.

“We realise that this is not simply an issue which can be dealt with overnight and we are not complacent about the further work which still needs to be done.

“I am, however, encouraged by the latest trends which are in no small part down the partnership efforts which have been undertaken to tackle these problems.”

John Crosland, anti-social behaviour officer for Bradford Council, said some of the individuals who have received Asbos should be praised for their work with agencies to try and stop their drinking habits.

Those sentenced were: Dean Hale, 32, of St Paul’s Road, Manningham, was banned from areas including Rawson Road, North Parade and Northgate until August, 2014.
