An outdoor centre for children, which was the beneficiary of last year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal, is calling for help to raise the final £10,000 needed for a new adventure playground.

The Nell Bank centre in Ilkley received almost £75,000 towards the playground from the charity appeal of former Bradford Councillor Peter Hill, whose mayoral year ended last May.

It will replace the centre’s existing outdoor play area, which has been used by about 400,000 youngsters since it was built more than 20 years ago, and will be more inclusive for children with disabilities.

The playground will also include a tree house and will be suitable for use in all weathers with a modular design so individual sections can be taken away for servicing.

Bruce Fowler, Nell Bank centre manager, said: “It will be another Nell Bank first nationally. Everything here is already adapted for youngsters with disabilities, so this will be the icing on the cake and nationally significant in terms of the way youngsters with and without disabilities can play together.

“This is really special in terms of the statement it makes and it’s the Bradford community that’s helped make it possible. We just need another £10,000 so we can go ahead with it.”

Mr Hill said: “The people of Bradford were enormously generous during my year’s appeal considering it was a difficult year. If they could dig a little deeper it would be wonderful because it will benefit the 20,000 children who visit Nell Bank each year.

“My opinion is, if it isn’t the best, it’s one of the best outdoor education centres in the country.”

Last year’s appeal also raised more than £13,000 for a new bandstand in Haworth Central Park, which was officially opened in September.
