Campaigners hoping to save a Bradford day centre used by disabled people say there is still a lot more work to do in the New Year.

More than 11,000 people signed a petition to keep Whetley Hill Resource Centre open and now council bosses are recommending it is given 18 months to make enough savings to secure its survival.

Bradford Council had been planning to shut it as part of budget cuts but the petition prompted the Council to carry out a consultation with users over the way forward.

Changes could include closing the centre for one day a week and charging £3 for food and transport, which should save £143,000. In the meantime further work will be undertaken to look at how the building can be better used by the community.

One of the lead campaigners is 64-year-old Kath Wooller, of Holme Wood, who has been using the centre since 1992 and says it has been a lifeline for her and all the others it provides help, support and activities for five days a week.

People from as far away as Keighley use the centre which has been running for the past 35 years.

A decision on the reprieve will be made by senior councillors at the next meeting of the executive on January 20 but first the report will be discussed at a meeting of the social care overview and scrutiny committee tomorrow which will be at the centre itself. Mrs Wooller said: “I know we have not won outright yet but it’s looking in our favour.”
