Pudsey-based vehicle recovery company Green Flag is bracing itself for its busiest day of the year tomorrow.

Research has shown that January 3 is the most likely day for breakdowns, and Green Flag is expecting to be 50 per cent busier than an average Tuesday as people return to work.

The days which fall after holidays are when most people need help. The most common reason is for non-starting, mainly from flat batteries. Miranda Schunke, of Green Flag, said: “Icy conditions and wet, cold weather mean cars are far more likely to break down in winter but the recent run of mild weather has undoubtedly helped drivers.

“Batteries can fail more often in cold conditions, and the increased use of de-misters, heaters and windscreen wipers places an extra strain on them.

“In addition, people tend to use their cars less over the holiday period.”
