The future of a Bradford football club has been plunged into doubt after thieves targeted its changing hut in the very week that repairs were finished following a previous break-in.

Players and staff of Undercliffe Celtic FC were left devastated when they turned up to their hut in Peel Park, Bradford, on Saturday to find piping from underneath the hut had been pulled out.

The club’s bosses believe it was targeted by metal thieves in the same week repairs, funded by a £3,500 Bradford Council grant, had finished after a break-in last year.

Secretary Kevin Doherty said: “It’s sickening really that people can come along and do this.

“Obviously they don’t realise the time and money that is spent on this project and it’s really gut-wrenching they have the mind to do it.

“We are looking to get it repaired as soon as possible. It is fit for use at the moment for changing in, but there’s no plumbing facilities – we can’t use the toilet facilities or the shower.”

Mr Doherty said the club should be able to carry on, although he said any funding would have to be spent on repairs rather than equipment.

But treasurer Tony Lyons thought the future of the club looked less certain.

He said: “The club may have to fold now. It would be unfair for us to ask for another grant because it’s happened twice, it’s a waste of money and it would happen again.

“So if we have nowhere to store our gear then we have no chance – we may have to play all our games away this year, I don’t know until all the managers get together to see what they want to do.

“I just feel gutted. You give your time and effort and you get the low-life who just do it for the sake of doing it.

“They don’t like to see anybody else enjoying themselves, probably.”
