by Jo Winrow City Hall Reporter The two companies in the running for a 25-year £400 million contract to deal with waste from Bradford and Calderdale are to be whittled down to one in December.

Both authorities will need to select the preferred bidder out of Earth Tech Skanska and 3SE at meetings of full council, which are scheduled for December 13 in Bradford and December 7 in Calderdale.

This would enable the 193,000 tonnes-a-year contract, which would run from 2015, to be awarded by March 31, next year.

An update on the management contract for dealing with both district’s household waste details how both companies involved would develop a Council-owned site at Bowling Back Lane in Bradford.

Ian Bairstow, the Council’s strategic director for environment and sport, states in a report due to be discussed next week: “The balance sought is to provide sufficient capacity for both Councils, but avoid paying for oversized facilities.”

The deal is essential to prevent the Council having to pay increasing landfill tax costs, when a trading scheme between authorities is abolished in 2013.
