Councillors will decide whether to grant planning permission for developer Westfield’s long-awaited Broadway shopping centre next week.

Detailed plans for £275 million complex have been recommended for approval by Bradford Council officers.

An application by Westfield Shoppingtowns Ltd is for 75 shops plus cafes, restaurants and bars with car parking. Broadway is expected to create 2,500 retail jobs, with another 1,500 building jobs during its construction.

Details of further planned offices and apartments will be finalised within seven years of planning permission being granted, creating another 320 jobs, the Council report states.

Bradford Council’s regulatory and appeals committee will decide whether to grant planning permission at a meeting next Wednesday.

A report to the committee states: “It is hoped that development of this site and the renewed vibrancy which should result in the core of the city will bring significant benefits to the vitality of the city.

“Resultant urban integration, regeneration, investment to historic buildings, increased activity in Little Germany and increased property confidence will have broad benefits for the city and its strong local distinctiveness.”

Major elements of a previous scheme, for 100 shops and approved in 2004, have been reduced in size or scrapped.

There will be no food court on the 6.3-hectare site but there will be food outlets in the mall, which will open out on to the street, meaning they will be able to operate when the centre is closed.

The revised plans also include a small public square, which will be known as Forster Square and will have the William Forster statue at its centre.
