A former Bradford City player is hoping his memoirs will raise money for charity after being made available through the district’s libraries.

Terry Regan has written What was it like in your day Grandad? for his grandchildren and in the memory of his late wife, Barbara, who died of cancer in 1987.

The 85-year-old, who played for Bradford City after the Second World War and spent 25 years working for greetings card company Sharpes Classic and then his own cards business, was born in 1926 in Waile Street, White Abbey, in Bradford.

He decided to write his book for his grandchildren, who never knew their grandmother and because the youngsters often asked him about his life.

And although the book is not available to buy, Mr Regan has made a request for people to donate to charity after reading his book, which is available through 20 libraries across the district.

Mr Regan, who now lives in Riddings Road, Ilkley, hopes people will want to donate to one of six charities – Marie Curie Cancer Care, the Alzheimer’s Society, St Gemma’s Hospice, Heart Research UK, Sue Ryder Care and Cancer Research.

The book contains pictures from Mr Regan’s life, including his time in the Army from 1945 to 1948 and letters between himself and his wife, while he was in the Green Howards and details of his time with Bradford City, although he left the club after turning down the opportunity to become a professional.

Mr Regan believes although his wife was a private person, she would enjoy the book.

“I think that she would been reticent to start with, but I’m sure she would have thought it a wonderful idea,” he said.

“I wrote it originally for my grandchildren who never knew their grandmother. But I’m quite pleased with how it turned out.

“I wanted something people could read and enjoy and I tried to avoid making it too personal.”
