A 22-year-old woman from the district has died suddenly while on holiday in the Canary Islands.

Rosie Tarpy, from Keighley, died in her sleep in the early hours of Thursday, the day after arriving in Fuerteventura. No details have yet been released about the cause of her death.

Members of Miss Tarpy’s family travelled earlier this week to the island and hope to bring her body back tomorrow.

Her great aunt, Shirley Tarpy, of Stell Hill, Keighley, said her grand-daughter had told her the news.

“We don’t really know anything yet about how this happened,” she said. “All I know is that Rosie was saying on her Facebook page that she was having a wonderful time out there, and that she was sunbathing and getting a tan.

“Then she was found dead the next day. It’s just a complete shock, absolutely terrible. She was a lovely girl.

“Her whole family is deeply shocked of course. Her mum is distraught.” She said her great niece was born in Keighley and had been a pupil at Holy Family Catholic School, in the town.

Miss Tarpy’s aunt, Jane Hill, said her niece had been an employee at a branch of the Santander bank, in Bradford.

She said Miss Tarpy had been staying with a friend in an apartment in the Canary Islands, and had travelled there on Wednesday, the day before she died.

“We’re hoping to be able to bring her body back tomorrow,” she said. “As yet there has been no cause of death identified. We are all devastated by her unexpected death.”

Former Holy Family deputy head teacher Sean Gilligan said prayers had been said for Miss Tarpy and her family at Keighley’s St Joseph’s Church. “Her family will be devastated, it’s a tragic situation,” he said.

Miss Tarpy was the daughter of Richard and Maire and had three sisters.
